Maneuvering his bike along the long, winding, and secluded road toward his house, Rock wondered again what had possessed him to invite Tessa and Travis to stay with him over the weekend. Worse, he’d called her his, something he hadn’t said to any woman since Chelsea.

Rock didn’t love Tessa. He cared a great deal about her, but it wasn’t love.

Parking his bike in the garage, he climbed off and headed inside. Grabbing a beer from the refrigerator, he swallowed half the bottle as he headed into the living room. Gazing out the large picture window, Rock stared at the sparkling blue lake.

He loved his house, its tranquil location without neighbors watching his comings and goings. Stumbling upon the ten acres while he was on a Sunday ride, he’d called the broker, making an offer by the end of the day.

Wrath had built his home at the top of a hill with a glorious view of the town. Rock wanted water and enough land for a horse or two.

Unbidden, an image of Travis splashing around, tossing stones into the water, came to mind. A grin slid up the corners of his mouth. Rock sure liked the little guy, and he definitely liked his mother. But it wasn’t love.

Finishing the beer, he stalked into his bedroom. He wouldn’t call and rescind the invitation, but having them here for two days and two nights would be a challenge. Why hadn’t he thought it through last night?

After a shower, he grabbed the keys to his truck. Rock planned to pick up Tessa and Travis before driving to the grocery. He knew she liked anything Italian, bagels, and deli sandwiches. Beyond those, he hadn’t a clue.

At least his cleaning lady had come today, something he hadn’t thought of until right that minute. She always changed the sheets on his bed and did the washing. No one had used his guest room in months, not since a buddy had come through town on his way to his next duty station. The sheets had been changed afterward. Rock wouldn’t encourage Tessa to use it, but didn’t want her feeling as if she had to share his bed.

Deciding he wanted to drive by Burn’s house, he took the direct route, wondering if he’d spot the same car from a couple weeks ago. And the lawman who’d gotten out of it.

Rock knew Wrath had passed the information to Ethan, but he’d heard nothing since. He knew the sheriff would need a lot more than one suspicious sighting to do anything about what Rock had seen.

Knowing the Night Devils president wouldn’t recognize his truck, he slowed before approaching Burn’s house. He didn’t see the same car, nor were there any bikes in front. For a Friday evening, the quiet seemed odd. Maybe he’d taken his family out of town for the weekend. After all, even the president of an outlaw biker gang had family obligations.

Relieved, Rock took the next turn, pulling into Tessa’s drive. Getting out, he looked up to see her standing in the doorway, her bright smile punching through him.
